| Ulster CC Soccer Advances to Soccer Nationals |
Ulster Community College, winner of the 2007 Region 15 title, continued their winning ways with a solid 6-0 victory over Springfield Tech in the District 21 Championship on Tuesday November 6. Ulster outshot overmatched (8-14-2) Springfield Tech 16-3 in the first half and 26-5 for the game. Juan Peralta scored three goals for the Senators and Pedro Garcia and Byron Garcia rounded Ulster's scoring.
The Senators (20-2-1), seeded second, will now face No. 3 Herkimer 4:45 p.m. Saturday November 10, with No. 1 Union meeting No. 4 Richland at 2:30 p.m. In the latest national rankings unbeaten Union (21-0) is first, followed by (15-2-1) Herkimer, Ulster and (13-4-2) Richland. The winners will meet on Sunday for the DIII title.In Saturday's national semifinal, Ulster will face a familiar foe in Herkimer. Last month the two teams played to a 3-3 draw at Ulster, with the Senators rallying from a 3-1 deficit in the game's final eight minutes of regulation.Since that tie, Ulster has won 11 straight games, outscoring its opponents, 37-4. Over 23 games, the Senators have outscored their opponents, 102-14.
The win was a big one for Hall of fame coach George Vizvary, who will be taking his Senators to the national semifinals for the first time since Ulster placed third in the country in 2001. In 2002, Ulster lost in the district final and had not been back in district play until ending its four-year Region XV championship drought with a 2-0 victory over Suffolk last Saturday.Prior to a four-year hiatus from Ulster (1996-99), Vizvary led the Senators to 18 berths in nationals in his first 28 years, including NJCAA titles in 1977 and '78. Earlier this season, Vizvary (505-147-26) won his 500th game at Ulster.
