Monroe College will serve as the proud host of the 2012 Region XV Basketball Tournaments this weekend. In all, 20 different teams will converge on the new Monroe Athletic Center (MAC) in New Rochelle. The only exception will be in Men's Division II, where SUNY Orange will make their way to Warwick, Rhode Island on Friday to play in the Region XXI Tourney. The Colts will square off against Dean College in a 7pm semi-final at the Community College of Rhode Island.
Closer to home in Westchester County, four Regional champions will be crowned Sunday. The heaviest action will take place on Friday and Saturday when six games will be played each day. At the end of the three-day event, 16 games will be played and estimated crowds totaling anywhere between 4,000-6,000 fans will see the action at the New Roc City based complex.
Games get underway early Friday morning with four Men's Division III Quarterfinals taking place. At 10am, No. 5 Nassau will face Island-rival and fourth-seed Suffolk. Following that highly anticipated game will be the Noon time game featuring No. 6 Ulster and third-seed Hostos. No. 2 Bronx will battle No. 7 Rockland at 2pm, and Mid Hudson Conference rivals Dutchess (No. 8) and top-seed Sullivan meet at 4pm. Sullivan, the defending Region XV champions, once again will host the NJCAA Men's Division III National Championships from March 15-17. With the aforementioned SUNY Orange success coupled with Westchester's tangle with Globe in the Division I Tournament opening round (Wednesday), this season will mark the first time in recent memory where all six Mid Hudson Conference schools will participate in postseason play.
Friday's slate will be closed out with the Women's Division III Semi-Finals. Third-seed, and defending Regional champion Suffolk will meet second seeded Westchester at 6:30pm. No. 4 Rockland, who returns to the tournament for the first time over 10 years, will play top seed Nassau at 8:30pm.
On Saturday, second-seeded CCRI and No. 3 Dean College will open the doors at 10am in a Women's Division II semi-final. The other DII semi-final will pit SUNY Orange (No. 4) and host (and No. 1) Monroe College. Monroe will begin its quest to defend their NJCAA Division II National Championship. Semi-final action switches to the Men's Division III side at 2pm when the Ulster-Hostos winner meets the Bronx-Rockland winner. At 4pm, the Nassau-Suffolk victor will take on the Dutchess-Sullivan winner. Men's Division I action highlights the day when at 6:30pm second-seeded ASA College hooks up with No. 3 Harcum College, and the Globe-Westchester winner faces top-seed and defending Region XV Champ Monroe College.
The tournament wraps up with four title contests on Sunday. The Women's and Men's DIII champions will be crowned beginning at Noon and 2:30pm respectively. At 4:30pm, the Women's DII tournament champion will be decided, while the Men's DI finale will commence at 7pm.
